Discovering Hangzhou’s 900-Year-Old Liuxia Old Street
Stepping away from the typical bustling tourist hotspots, Hangzhou holds a hidden gem that beautifully bridges ancient history with modern urban renewal: the 900-year-old Liuxia Old Street.

A Living Heritage
Unlike commercialized ancient towns that feel mass-produced, Liuxia Old Street retains its authentic architectural beauty and cultural depth. The renovation project carefully preserves the historic relationship between the Liuxia River and its parallel streets, keeping the original layout intact while revitalizing idle waterfront spaces.

Modern Comfort Meets Community Soul
Urban designers transformed pocket spaces into cozy pocket parks, cultural exhibition spots, and small gathering areas. This creates an interconnected network where locals and visitors alike can comfortably stroll, chat, and pause to enjoy the scenery.

To prevent over-commercialization and keep the neighborhood alive, the area introduces selective new businesses like creative tea houses, boutique guesthouses, and artisan workshops. The goal is clear: avoid turning the historic street into an empty tourist trap devoid of residents, ensuring that the name “Liuxia” (meaning “to stay”) continues to honor its legacy of living history and continuous growth.
